The Solution

Avoid Lectures

Lectures don’t work.   Your loved-one has probably been getting lectures about his problems since we was a young man.   Have any of these lectures worked?   If lectures worked, your loved-one would have gotten clean and sober years ago.

Lectures have not worked for your loved-one in the past.   They will not work if you try lectures again.   Lectures can make the situation worse.

Almost all conventional treatment centers use some variation of the lecture format.   As an example, most therapy meetings (either group or individual) with men in early recovery usually become a lecture by the therapist.   Conventional treatment centers often use different names for their lectures.   They don’t like to admit that they use a lecture format.   The lecture format is very profitable.   But, lectures actually make things worse.

Use actions and activities, not lectures.

From the ExperientialRecovery.org website: “Experiential Recovery involves actions, movements, and activities.   It encourages clients to identify and address hidden or subconscious issues through a range of other active experiences.   Clients tend to focus on the activity at hand and drop the guards they have built over their lives that have been blocking recovery and causing relapse.   Experiential Recovery goes deep.   Clients using experiential recovery welcome the honesty required to get to the real and deeper problems.

Solutions Retreat is one of the leaders in the growing Experiential Recovery field.   Your loved-one’s experience while at our facility will have a permanent effect (one day at a time) and he will enjoy the experience.   His recovery plan will not be easy but we hear belly laughs at our retreat center from men who have not had more than a chuckle in ten years.   We have a saying here: “Laughter is the sound of recovery.”   We often say it was the laughter that kept us coming back.

Immerse in recovery.

Main Meeting Room
Our clients don’t have time to do much other than process recovery.   And due to our intensity, some of this processing takes place on a subconscious level.   In addition to meetings at our treatment center, our clients will go to recovery meetings in the Nashville community outside our treatment center.   They will attend one-on-one meetings with our staff, our alumni, and selected volunteers.
[photo-vsFood]Additionally, they eat three meals a day together and usually discuss recovery during meals.   We have found that this level of intensity and immersion in recovery is very valuable in breaking down these sub-conscious “old ideas” that are running your loved one’s life and ruing your families’ lives.

Integrate into the recovery community.

Many in recovery tell the newly recovering drug addict or alcoholic that they need to find “new play grounds and play mates.”   Or: “If you hang around a barber shop, eventually you’re going to get a haircut.”   By this they mean that if a recovering addict or drug alcoholic who is in early recovery goes home and hangs around their old friends in the old places, they are probably going to drink and use again.   We agree with these statements so we do something other treatment centers don’t do.   We show clients (through client experience) how to get connected with healthy people in their community after our clients leave our facility.   While at our facility, we will drive our guests to a large number of recovery meetings.   Our guests will learn how to tell a healthy recovery meeting from an unhealthy meeting.

One of the follies of traditional treatment centers is they don’t understand that people leave their facility feeling isolated from the rest of the outside world.   Your loved one needs to learn (through experience) how to integrate himself into his local recovery community.   How to find healthy friends!!!   Healthy friends that are fun to spend time with!!!   Your loved one will need help and support from this recovery community for the rest of his life.   He will probably also want to provide support to others in his recovery community.
